moving to live close to campus

Hi, I'm moving from Santa Cruz to be closer to school, the drive 'over the hill' is too much as I found out over the last semester.

I want to know what parts of the downtown area should be avoided because the rents are all about the same and I've heard some parts are 'dicey.' I want a private room, preferably in a house share with other SJSU students. Thanks for the advice!

If you want to live close to campus, I would recommend the apts on 4th steet. I think the apts really close to campus are nice, its when you go further downtown that the areas get bad.

I would agree with Paul. Also, the Japan town area is nice too. I believe its on 7th and Taylor.

4th street apts are expensive probably around $1000 or so. What I mean by bad is that you don't want to walk around at night by yourself in some areas. I would try to find a roomate on housing. I think I saw a few listings for rooms and roomates availa

Re:moving to live close to campus

i think most of the houses/buildings from san salvador to the freeway (between 10th and 5th) are pretty crappy and filled with shifty looking people. Reed street seems to be an exception to this area. Though there are alot of shifty looking people around, theres still lots of students living in that area, and ive never been harmed or known any1 to have been harmed in that area neither.

If you don't mind the way people look there are no places worth avoiding. No place is more or less dangerous than another but stay away from the 3rd and San Salvador corner. Way too much traffic especially btwn 2-3am on the weekends and people have a tendency to drive up onto your lawn and some times hit the house.
